Philadelphia Region Organization Development Network initiates pilot "action
research" program for local pro bono future searches. 16 facilitators and organizations
participate in training to see whether approach leads to actual conferences
and community action.
September 1992
First public Future Search Learning Workshop for 72 people demonstrates widespread
interest in the method.
Fall, 1992
Discovering Common Ground (published by Berrett-Koehler), documents theory
base and case studies world-wide. Royalties support plans for new Network.
January 1993
Philadelphia region community leaders invited to have "professional
consultants work with you on a future search at little or no cost--an invaluable
opportunity to improve your strategic planning, create more commitment to your
mission, and build links with your own network." 20 organizations take up the offer, confirming need and viability of this form
of public service.
July 1993
SearchNet started by Marv Weisbord and Sandra Janoff as a pro-bono, non-profit
program of Resources for Human Development, Inc., a Philadelphia-based community
agency. Mailing to 400 colleagues yields 120 founding members eager to learn
and serve together.
October, 1993
Newsletter SearchNEWS by and for members begins publication edited by Mary
Ann Williams.
February 1994
First local review meeting held in Philadelphia for a dozen non-profits. Results
indicate feasibility of offering local program start-up training model in other
cities.
1994-99
Local Network future search start-up workshops held in Washington, DC, Northern
New Jersey, Philadelphia, Toronto, Ottawa, New York, Seattle, Colorado, Orange
County, CA, with volunteer facilitators and future search sponsors learning
together.
June, 1995
Future Search: An Action Guide to Finding Common Ground (published by Berrett-Koehler),
makes methodology available to all. Many Network member cases included.
March 1997
Future Search Associates started by experienced members to offer for-pay services,
helping to finance pro bono service projects world wide.
January 1999
SearchNet renamed Future Search Network to avoid confusion with internet and
employment searching. Newsletter renamed FutureSearching, edited by Larry Porter
since 1995.
March 1999
Future Search Alliance replaces FSAssociates as an international funding arm
of the Network.
January 2000
2nd edition of Future Search: An Action Guide to Finding Common Ground (published
by Berrett-Koehler), includes new cases and practice tips from many Network
members.
February 2000
First "Facilitating the Whole System in the Room" workshop
held in Bryn Mawr, PA, presents a philosophy and theory for managing yourself
as you manage large, diverse task groups--in future search and other meetings.
1995-2001
Public Future Search Learning Workshops held in Australia, Austria, England,
Germany, India, Kenya, Northern Ireland, Singapore, Sweden, and the United
States.
2000-2001
First foundation grants secured from Roe Walker/Robert E. Pogue Charitable
Trust and the Phoebe W. Haas Charitable Trust to build service mission through
web site development.
January 2001
Members on five continents running future searches on vital topics within and
between diverse cultures.
June 2001
42nd Future Search Learning Workshop brings to more than 2,600 the number of
people world-wide trained in the method.
July, 2001
Regional Planning in Indonesia, - UNICEF sponsored project to develop district-level
future search capacity. Network team trained 40 facilitators in Jakarta and
then went to Java, Sulewesi and Irian Jaya to support local future searches
and mentor newly trained facilitators.
